Description

Author: Chetan Bhagat

Set in IIT Delhi in the early 1990s, Five Point Someone portrays the lives of protagonist Hari and his two best friends Ryan and Alok as they navigate one of India's most prestigious and demanding educational institutions. It explores the darker, often hidden side of IIT—one where students who have worked relentlessly for years to gain admission find themselves struggling to maintain their grades, preserve their friendships, and have any semblance of life outside their brutal academic schedules.

The story is narrated primarily by Hari, with occasional passages from Ryan and Alok, as well as a revealing letter from Hari's girlfriend Neha Cherian. Their initial elation at making it into IIT is quickly crushed by the grinding monotony and impossible rigor of the academic workload. The two main plot threads follow the trio's numerous creative (and sometimes desperate) attempts to cope with and beat the oppressive system, and Hari's complicated romantic relationship with Neha, who happens to be the daughter of Professor Cherian, the domineering and intimidating head of the Mechanical Engineering department.

The characters, led by the brilliant but rebellious Ryan, frequently lament how the internationally celebrated IIT system has stifled their natural creativity and curiosity by forcing them to value grades and GPA above genuine learning and innovation. Uninspiring lectures, endless assignments, and soul-crushing examinations add to their mounting frustration and disillusionment.

Funny, dark, and relentlessly honest, Five Point Someone is the story of three friends whose measly five-point-something GPAs threaten to derail everything—their friendship, their love lives, and their futures. This debut novel from India's biggest-selling English language author became a cultural phenomenon and inspired the blockbuster Bollywood film 3 Idiots.
