Description

Author: Ayn Rand

Who is John Galt? When he says that he will stop the motor of the world, is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he have to fight his battles not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves?

You will know the answer to these questions when you discover the reason behind the baffling events that play havoc with the lives of the amazing men and women in this remarkable book. Tremendous in scope and breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus, which launched an ideology and a movement.

Set in a dystopian United States, the book depicts heavy industry companies suffering under increasingly burdensome laws and regulations. Railroad executive Dagny Taggart and her lover, steel magnate Hank Rearden, struggle against looters who want to exploit their productivity. They discover that a mysterious figure called John Galt is persuading other business leaders to abandon their companies and disappear as a strike of productive individuals against the looters.

The novel explores philosophical themes including reason, property rights, individualism, libertarianism, and capitalism. It depicts what Rand saw as the failures of governmental coercion. This philosophical revolution told in the form of an action thriller has influenced countless libertarian and conservative thinkers and remains one of the most enduringly popular and controversial works of fiction of the twentieth century.
